[B. 8:45 a.m. CALL TO ORDER/PUBLIC MEETING]

[00:00:04]

THIS MEETING WILL COME BACK TO ORDER.

THE BOARD IS HERE FOR A QUICK ORDER OF BUSINESS.

BEFORE WE GET STARTED, THOUGH, I'M ASKING REGENT SHARKEY TO LEAD US IN THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE. PLEASE STAND AND JOIN ME IN THE PLEDGE.

GOOD MORNING. I'D LIKE TO WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO SYSTEM OFFICE TODAY. WE ARE HERE TO ADVANCE THE SEARCH FOR CU'S PRESIDENT BY NOMINATING A FINALIST OR

[1. Action Item: Naming of Finalist or Finalists for the Presidency of the University of Colorado]

FINALISTS. TODAY MARKS AN IMPORTANT STEP IN THE SEARCH PROCESS THAT BEGAN IN SEPTEMBER.

VOTING FOR A UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT IS EACH REGENT'S CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY.

AT THE SAME TIME, THE BOARD HAS LEANED HEAVILY ON PUBLIC INPUT THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO UNTIL THE PROCESS IS COMPLETE.

AFTER TODAY'S MEETING, WE ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO WAIT AT LEAST 14 DAYS BEFORE TAKING A VOTE TO ELECT A PRESIDENT.

IN BETWEEN, TODAY'S FINALIST, OR FINALISTS, WE'LL BE ASKED TO VISIT EACH CU CAMPUS IN THE SYSTEM OFFICE.

THEY WILL MEET WITH MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY AND ANSWER QUESTIONS AT PUBLIC FORUMS. MEMBERS OF THE CU COMMUNITY WILL THEN HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE THEIR FEEDBACK ON THE FINALIST OR FINALISTS.

THE BOARD WILL CONSIDER ALL FEEDBACK BEFORE IT TAKES ANOTHER VOTE IN APRIL TO ELECT A PRESIDENT. IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE WE WILL TAKE ALL FEEDBACK BEFORE MAKING A DECISION.

BEFORE I OPEN THE FLOOR TO NOMINATIONS, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE SEARCH COMMITTEE FOR PLAYING SUCH AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN GETTING US TO THIS POINT.

WE WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE 19 INDIVIDUALS WHO CARE SO DEEPLY ABOUT THIS INSTITUTION.

THEY CAME FROM EVERY CORNER OF OUR COMMUNITY: STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF, ALUMNI, DONORS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND TWO OF OUR VERY OWN REGENTS.

THEY SPENT A GOOD DEAL OF THE WINTER REVIEWING DOCUMENTS AND CANDIDATES HAVING DEEP DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THEIR QUALIFICATIONS AND THEIR ABILITIES TO LEAD A UNIVERSITY AS DIVERSE AND COMPLEX AS OURS.

I KNOW I SPEAK FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THIS BOARD WHEN I CONVEY OUR GRATITUDE FOR THEIR TIME AND EXPERTISE IN GETTING US TO THIS POINT.

THE BOARD HAS INTERVIEWED FIVE HIGHLY QUALIFIED CANDIDATES.

I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THEM ALL AND FELT LIKE THIS WAS A SUCCESSFUL SEARCH PROCESS.

NOW, GIVEN THIS, DO WE HAVE A NOMINATION? CHAIR KROLL, I DO.

AND FIRST I WANT TO THANK YOU AND YOUR ROLE IN GUIDING US THROUGH THIS AS WELL.

I DO HAVE A CANDIDATE TO NOMINATE, BUT FIRST I WANT TO ECHO YOUR REMARKS, JACK, ABOUT THE SEARCH COMMITTEE AND THE PROCESS.

WE HAD A DEDICATED AND COMMITTED GROUP OF 19 PEOPLE, TWO OF WHICH WERE REGENTS, APPRECIATE THEIR SERVICE AND THEIR TIME.

REGENT SMITH AND I SERVED AS MEMBERS OF THE SEARCH COMMITTEE, AND THE SEARCH COMMITTEE VETTED A HIGHLY QUALIFIED, LIKE YOU SAID, AND DIVERSE POOL OF CANDIDATES.

THIS WAS A THOROUGH AND INCLUSIVE PROCESS.

THERE WAS A WEALTH OF TALENT AND EXPERIENCE IN THE POOL.

THE COMMITTEE NARROWED THE FIELD TO TEN CANDIDATES FOR INTERVIEWS.

AFTER THAT, THE SEARCH COMMITTEE NARROWED THE FIELD TO FIVE CANDIDATES WHOM THE BOARD INTERVIEWED. I WAS IMPRESSED WITH EVERYONE WE MET, BUT ONE CANDIDATE STOOD OUT FOR ME.

THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS, TODD SALIMAN DEMONSTRATED TREMENDOUS EXPERIENCE AND PROVEN LEADERSHIP. THIS IS TRUE IN HIS TIME AS THE BUDGET DIRECTOR FOR THE STATE OF COLORADO, AS A MEMBER OF THE COLORADO LEGISLATURE, AS A CFO FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, AND AS OUR INTERIM PRESIDENT FOR THE LAST NINE MONTHS.

FURTHERMORE, MR. SALIMAN DEMONSTRATED HIS ABILITY TO WORK WELL WITH THE BOARD AND BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN ELECTED OFFICIALS AND THE BROADER UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY.

FINALLY, MR. SALIMAN SPOKE HIGHLY OF HIS LOVE FOR CU.

HE HAS SPENT HIS WHOLE LIFE AROUND THE UNIVERSITY AND THAT CAME THROUGH IN HIS INTERVIEW.

THE BOARD OF REGENTS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT 14 DAYS AS TODD MEETS WITH BOTH THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS OF THE UNIVERSITY.

WE WELCOME THE COMMUNITY INPUT AS WE MOVE FORWARD WITH WHAT HAS BEEN A SIGNIFICANT AND WORTHWHILE PROCESS.

AND AGAIN, I WANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT WE WELCOME THE COMMUNITY INPUT.

THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT TO US AS WE WEIGH OUR FINAL DECISION IN 14 DAYS.

[00:05:01]

THEREFORE, I NOMINATE TODD SALIMAN TO BE FINALIST FOR CU PRESIDENT.

THANK YOU, REGENT. SHARKEY.

IS THERE A SECOND? REGENT SPIEGEL? THANK YOU, CHAIR KROLL, AND THANK YOU, VICE CHAIR SHARKEY.

I'D LIKE TO SECOND THE NOMINATION FOR TODD SALIMAN FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO PRESIDENT, AND I TOO LOOK FORWARD TO RECEIVING ADDITIONAL INPUT OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.
