WELL, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE AND THANKS TO THE THREE OUTGOING REGENTS FOR ANOTHER
[00:00:08]
MEETING, I PROMISE THIS WILL BE THE LAST FOR SURE.YEAH. I'D LIKE TO WELCOME [INAUDIBLE] WHO'S ON OUR CALL AS WELL THIS MORNING.
THE PURPOSE OF OUR MEETING TODAY IS TO BRING TO A CLOSE, THE HIRING OF THE ASSOCIATE VICE
[1. Appointment of Associate Vice President of Internal Audit for the University of Colorado]
PRESIDENT OF INTERNAL AUDIT.AS YOU KNOW, WE'VE GONE THROUGH THAT PROCESS AND WE'RE READY TO TO CAST A VOTE AND TO WELCOME A NEW PERSON AND TO MOVE ON NOW THAT WE HAVE A NEW REGENT OR A COMPLETE REGENT STAFF, JUST A REPEATER, THAT TOMORROW WE HAVE A BUSY AFTERNOON, STARTING WITH A NOON, 30 MINUTE EXECUTIVE SESSION AND THEN THE WINTER RETREAT, FOLLOWED BY A SPECIAL OCCASION, WHICH IS THE NEW REGENTS BEING SWORN IN.
FELICITY, WE APPRECIATE THE TIME THAT YOU SPENT ALONG WITH LESLEY AND HEIDI, IN BRINGING THIS CANDIDATE FORWARD.
AND I KNOW YOU'VE WORKED REALLY HARD AT IT AND WE'RE GLAD TO GET THAT OUT OF THE WAY AS WELL. SO, EFFIE, WILL YOU PLEASE CALL THE ROLL? REGENT CARSON. PRESENT.
HEY, GLEN, I'M JUST JUMPING OFF REAL QUICKLY FOR THE VOTE NOT TO GET OFF RIGHT AFTER THE VOTE JUST SO YOU KNOW. THANK YOU.
HERE TODAY, WE ARE VOTING ON ONE ITEM, WHICH IS THE ELECTION OF ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT OF INTERNAL AUDIT, IS THERE A MOTION FOR THE ELECTION OF THE VICE PRESIDENT OF INTERNAL AUDIT? SO MOVED.
SECOND. MOVED BY REGENT SMITH AND SECONDED BY REGENT SHARKEY.
WE HAVE A MOTION AND A SECOND.
WE'RE BRINGING BEFORE THE BOARD THE NAME [INAUDIBLE] FOR [INAUDIBLE] VICE PRESIDENT OF INTERNAL AUDIT.
IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS, NOW'S THE TIME TO TO MOVE ON.
OTHERWISE, WE'RE GOING TO GO TO A ROLL CALL VOTE.
AT THAT POINT. GLEN, I DON'T HAVE ANY QUESTIONS BUT WOULD JUST BE THE TIME FOR ME TO SPEAK ABOUT WHY I'M VOTING THE WAY I AM.
ALL RIGHT. I JUST WANT TO SHARE THAT I WILL NOT BE SUPPORTING THIS CANDIDATE TODAY JUST FOR TWO REASONS. ONE REASON IS THAT I AM CONCERNED THE LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND OVERSEEING AN AUDIT TEAM AT THIS LEVEL.
SO ESPECIALLY DURING THE TIME THAT WE HAVE TODAY WITH COVID AND THE COMPLEXITIES OF WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE UNIVERSITY, IT IS MY CONCERN THAT THERE'S THAT LACK OF EXPERIENCE.
MY OTHER CONCERN HAD TO DO WITH DIVERSITY RESPONSE AND THIS COULD BE BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION.
DIVERSITY RESPONSE WAS TARGETED OR WAS MENTIONED UNDER THE PREMISES OF DIVERSITY OF THOUGHT AND AT THE UNIVERSITY LEVEL, AS WELL AS MANY OTHER UNIVERSITIES WHO DON'T USE THAT TERM DIVERSITY OF THOUGHT.
AND JUST AS A REMINDER, THE REASON THAT WE DO THAT IS BECAUSE DIVERSITY OF THOUGHT HAS BEEN ALIGNED AND HAS BEEN A VERY CONTROVERSIAL TERM NATIONALLY AND IS WHY WE HAVE AS A UNIVERSITY CHOSEN TO USE VIEWPOINT DIVERSITY.
AND I JUST DIDN'T HEAR THE DEPTH OF UNDERSTANDING OF DIVERSITY.
SO THOSE ARE THE TWO REASONS WHY I CANNOT SUPPORT THIS INDIVIDUAL.
BUT I DO THINK THAT THOSE THINGS, TOO, CAN ALL BE LEARNED AND AND SUPPORT IT OVER TIME.
REGENT GRIEGO. ANYONE ELSE WITH THE COMMENT? YES, GLEN, THIS IS LINDA.
I WILL ALSO BE VOTING NO FOR ESSENTIALLY THE SAME REASONS THAT IRENE JUST MENTIONED, I THINK SHE SHE TALKED IN DEPTH ABOUT THE DIVERSITY ISSUES.
I'M MOSTLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE FACT THAT SHE'S A SOLE FINALIST WHO IS WELL QUALIFIED FOR
[00:05:05]
A CORPORATE JOB, BUT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO PAST EXPERIENCE OR INTEREST IN HIGHER EDUCATION AS JUDGED BY HER COVER LETTER AND HER RESUME.AND SOMETIMES IT'S GOOD TO BRING IN NEW BLOOD, TO BRING IN PEOPLE FROM THE CORPORATE WORLD INTO ACADEMIA.
I HAVE NO OBJECTION TO THAT AND I HAVE OFTEN SUPPORTED THAT.
BUT RIGHT NOW WE DON'T NEED NEW BLOOD ON WHAT WE CALL THE EIGHTH FLOOR, THE LEADERSHIP OF THE SYSTEM, BECAUSE EVERYTHING EVERYBODY PRETTY MUCH IS NEW BLOOD.
WE HAVE FOUR EMPLOYEES ON THE BOARD OF THAT ACTUALLY REPORT TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS.
THEY DON'T REPORT TO THE TO THE PRESIDENT.
THE FIRST, OF COURSE, IS THE PRESIDENT.
AND MARK KENNEDY HAS BEEN WITH US A YEAR AND A HALF, WHICH IS THE LONGEST TENURE OF ANY OF THESE FOUR PEOPLE.
UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAVE A TREASURER THAT WE JUST HIRED LAST MONTH WHO I DON'T BELIEVE IS EVEN ON BOARD YET. BUT WILL BE SOON.
I HOPE WE HAVE AN INTERIM IN OUR ATTORNEY POSITION.
AND SO THAT'S TO YET TO BE HIRED OR SEEN HOW THAT WILL WORK OUT.
SO I REALLY BELIEVE WE SHOULD HAVE DECLARED A FAILED SEARCH.
I MEAN, THIS IS THE DAY BEFORE THE NEW REGENTS GET SWORN IN.
I FEEL THAT THERE IS A RUSH TO HIRE BY THE OLD BOARD PRIOR TO THE DEMOCRATS TAKING OVER TOMORROW. AND I JUST THINK THAT'S UNFORTUNATE.
I'D LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING, I WILL BE VOTING IN FAVOR OF HER.
HOWEVER, I SHARE THE SAME CONCERNS AS A COUPLE OF MY COLLEAGUES HERE ABOUT HER LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND WHICH WAS THE REASON WHY I COULDN'T SUPPORT HER THIS LAST CONVERSATION WE HAD HERE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, I DO THINK THAT HAVING THAT STABILITY OF EXPERIENCE RIGHT NOW IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT TO THE UNIVERSITY AND TO OUR SYSTEM IN A POSITION SUCH AS AUDIT IT, I THINK IS IT'S A SIGNIFICANT POSITION.
AND I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE LACK OF EXPERIENCE THAT SHE HAS.
HOWEVER, I WILL VOTE IN FAVOR OF HER AND IT'S MY HOPE AND MY EXPECTATION THAT SHE'S GOING TO BE SURROUNDED BY A TEAM WHO WILL BE ABLE TO BRING HER UP TO SPEED AND WHERE SHE NEEDS TO BE IN A DEEPER AND BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO. THAT IS MY HOPE FOR HER, BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HER BE SUCCESSFUL.
IF SHE'S SUCCESSFUL, HER DEPARTMENT IS SUCCESSFUL AND SUCCESSFUL.
SO I HOPE THAT THIS IS I HOPE I DON'T REGRET THE VOTE THAT THAT I'M GOING TO GIVE IN SUPPORT OF HER, BUT I WILL SUPPORT HER THIS TIME.
WELL, THANK YOU, REGENT SHARKEY, ARE WE READY TO MOVE ON NOW? HEY, CAN I JUST CHIME IN REAL QUICK? THIS IS JACK. I JUST WANT TO SAY I'M EXCITED TO VOTE IN FAVOR OF THIS CANDIDATE.
WE ARE REALLY YOU KNOW, WE HAD A GOOD PROCESS LED BY REGENT GANAHL AND SMITH.
WE EVEN GOT INPUT FROM THE STAFF MEMBERS WITHIN THE AUDIT UNIT.
IT'S EXCITING TO BRING IN SOMEBODY WHO CAN BRING IN SOME FRESH PERSPECTIVES FROM THE OUTSIDE. IT'S A BIG TASK.
I KNOW I'M EXCITED TO HAVE YOU JOIN THE UNIVERSITY, HOPEFULLY, AS THIS VOTE GOES IN YOUR FAVOR.
WE'RE EXCITED THAT YOU'RE INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN PUBLIC SERVICE.
AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO BE HERE WITH US TODAY AND TO CONSIDER THIS ROLE AT THE UNIVERSITY.
ANYONE ELSE? YOU KNOW, I HAVE ONE OTHER QUESTION I'VE NEVER HEARD AND SINCE WE ARE VOTING IN FAVOR, I THINK IT'S GOOD TO KNOW THE WHOLE PACKAGE THAT WE'RE VOTING IN FAVOR OF.
I'VE NEVER HEARD A SALARY THAT HAS BEEN OFFERED AND ACCEPTED.
AND SO JUST AS A POINT OF INFORMATION, I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I'M VOTING FOR.
FELICITY, WILL YOU HELP US OUT WITH THAT? SORRY, TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY THOUSAND DOLLAR SALARY.
TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY, WHAT IS OUR CURRENT AUDITOR MAKING? IT'S TWO THIRTY SEVEN.
I'LL HAVE TO LOOK THAT UP QUICKLY.
[00:10:02]
SO WE'LL GET THAT NUMBER FOR YOU.YEAH, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT KEVIN'S SALARY CURRENTLY IS.
I YOU SHOULD HAVE THAT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS FELICITY.
THIS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO HAVE IS WE'RE MAKING A VOTE, I LIKE TO HAVE AN INFORMED VOTE. I BELIEVE THAT, AS REGENT KROLL SAID, WE HAD A REGENT COMMITTEE.
NO, I'M NOT QUESTIONING THE PROCESS AT ALL.
OK, GO AHEAD. THE COMMITTEE THAT BROUGHT THIS FORWARD AND I THINK THAT WE KNEW WHAT WE WERE GOING TO DO WHEN WHEN WE LEFT THAT PARTICULAR MEETING.
I'M EXCITED ABOUT VOTING FOR HER.
WHETHER WE HAVE KEVIN SALARY OR NOT.
SHE'S MAKING TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS, AND I AM EXCITED ABOUT BRINGING HER ON BOARD. THAT'S TERRIFIC, I'M NOT QUESTIONING THE PROCESS AND I APPRECIATE THE PROCESS AFTER JUST GOING THROUGH KNOW WHAT I'M VOTING FOR GLEN.
LET'S SEE SUE, YOU KNOW, IT IS YOUR VOTE AND WE'LL CHECK THAT NUMBER FOR YOU.
OK, THANK YOU. IT'S GOING TO BE WHAT CHANGES YOUR VOTE THEN THAT CHANGES YOUR VOTE.
IT MIGHT CHANGE MY VOTE IF THERE IS A BIG DISCREPANCY.
I GUESS I'D LIKE TO KNOW THAT.
I MEAN, I'M PUTTING A LOT OF TRUST HERE.
I REALLY BELIEVE THAT WE'RE TRYING TO FIND THAT NUMBER FOR YOU.
ARE WE HAVING ANY LUCK WITH THAT, FELICITY.
AND I WILL HAVE IT IN A MINUTE, I'M SORRY.
WOULD CATHY NESBITT HAVE THAT?.
I'M LOOKING AT MY DOCUMENT AND IT [INAUDIBLE], I DON'T I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S THE FINAL NUMBER, BUT IT'S TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN THOUSAND.
AND WILL YOU CALL THE ROLL PLEASE.
NOW, THE MOTION AND A SECOND TO BRING [INAUDIBLE] ON IS ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT OF INTERNAL AUDIT. GREAT.
WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING YOU AS PART OF THE TEAM IF THERE ARE NO OTHER COMMENTS, Q UESTIONS. AGAIN, I [INAUDIBLE] REGENTS TIME THIS MORNING AND THERE WERE NO OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS. THIS MEETING IS ADJOURNED.
GLEN, I ACTUALLY DID HAVE A COMMENT TO MAKE.
SO BEFORE WE VOTE TO ADJOURN, I DO HAVE A COMMENT TO MAKE.
YOU KNOW, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT AS WE GO THROUGH THE PROCESS OF THESE SEARCHES AND HIRING DECISIONS, I FOR ONE AND MAYBE MY EIGHT OTHER COLLEAGUES DON'T FEEL THIS IS NECESSARY. I DON'T KNOW.
BUT I, FOR ONE, DO WANT TO BE INFORMED OF SALARIES BEFORE WE VOTE.
IS WE ARE MAKING THESE DECISIONS THAT WE UNDERSTAND THE SALARIES THAT THAT WE'RE OFFERING TO PEOPLE AND IN VOTING ON THAT IS PART OF.
PART OF OUR OBLIGATION, I FEEL A FIDUCIARY OBLIGATION TO KNOW THE FULL THE FULL FACTS ON THIS. AND SO I WOULD JUST ASK THAT AS WE MOVE FORWARD ON THESE SEARCHES, THAT IN HIRING DECISIONS THAT WE ARE INFORMED BEFORE WE VOTE.
THAT'S TRUE. I THINK THAT THAT'S THE WAY THAT WE NORMALLY ROLL.
AND I DON'T THINK THAT YOUR REQUEST IS OUT OF THE QUESTION.
ANYONE ELSE BEFORE I ADJOURN THIS MEETING.
MEETING ADJOURNED. THANKS.
